NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND FGCMD SCHOLARSHIPS

         Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, Inc. (FGCMD) is pleased to participate in scholarship programs that provide grants to college or university students whose major course of study is intended to lead to a career related to environmental concerns, floral design, gardening, horticulture or landscape design.

            Funding for scholarships comes from Life Memberships and the generous support of garden clubs and individual members.  To support scholarships by becoming a National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) or FGCMD Life Member, contact the FGCMD Membership and Affiliations Chairman.  Donations, memorial contributions or honorary contributions to the FGCMD Life Scholarship Fund also are most appreciated, and may be sent to the FGCMD office; donations to scholarship funds are tax-deductible. 

National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) scholarships are awarded annually, depending upon availability of funds. One student’s application may be submitted by Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, Inc. to the NGC scholarship board each year. Nationwide, 35 scholarships of $3,500 each will be granted for the 2010-11 academic year.  Application deadline: March 1.

A Central Atlantic Region (CAR) scholarship is awarded annually, depending upon availability of funds. One student’s application may be submitted by each of the 7 states in the region to the CAR scholarship board each year.  One scholarship of $2,500 will be granted at the 2009 CAR Fall Conference.  Application deadline: May 1.

Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, Inc. (FGCMD) scholarships are awarded annually, depending upon availability of funds.  A total of up $2,500 may be granted in one or more scholarships. Application deadline: May 1.

Eligibility:  One-year grants are available to junior, senior and graduate students.  Application may be made by sophomores for grants to be awarded in their junior year.

  • An applicant must be a legal resident of the United States and of the state of Maryland, and must attend an accredited college or university in the United States. 
  • An undergraduate applicant must be a full-time student enrolled for a minimum of 12 graded hours of classes.  A graduate applicant pursuing a Masters degree must be enrolled for a minimum of 9 graded hours. Doctoral, international and foreign exchange students may not apply, and scholarship funds cannot be used for study abroad, or for fellowships or internships. 
  • An applicant must be majoring in one of the following fields of study, with a career objective related to environmental issues, floral design, gardening, horticulture or landscape design: Agriculture Education, Agronomy, Biology, Botany, City (including Rural and Urban) Planning,  Economics, Environmental Concerns (Environmental, Horticulture, or Resource Management; Environmental Behavior), Environmental Conservation (including Environmental Engineering and Environmental Law), Floriculture, Forestry, Habitat or Forest/Systems Ecology, Horticulture, Landscape Design, Land Management, Plant Pathology/Science, Wildlife Science and/or other related or allied subjects. The Scholarship Committee must grant approval for application to be made in any major other than those listed above.
  • An applicant must have at least a 3.25 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
  •   A student receiving an NGC scholarship is ineligible for CAR or FGCMD grants in the same year.  

Application:  Only one application packet need be submitted per year for NGC, CAR and FGCMD grants described above; the FGCMD Scholarship Chairman will forward information to the applicable scholarship board(s).  An applicant must submit one complete, unbound, unstapled packet as instructed, to be received by the Chairman listed below by the required deadline. A student may reapply by submitting a new packet the following year(s).
